Have the cool kids moved on to soemthing else now? Pods - Just following what I thought was a Mac Ach tradition of beginning advice thread titles with that (mangled) phrase. And it doesn't have problems interacting with the scanner (or scanned images), so it tends to work, and, like so much of what made OS 9 a pleasure to use, it breaks consistently and almost predictably.

Notice that these aren't related to the function of the software itself - only in how it works with the system. There's a kind of voodoo dance I had to learn but don't recall now once you get into that, it works. Unless you remember to save the dictionary (and reselect at the start of a new document), it won't use the dictionary you just selected. The best feature of the software is the learning dictionary.

However, if you are doing black on white text in the same typeface throughout, it should be fine. The annoying thing I've found is that the software apparently uses its own adjustments to brightness/contrast and appears to only do OCR in black/white - in the Epson software I have to slide the settings so high that it's almost unreadable with some documents. If you don't include the original image, the document size isn't terribly large. It was the best thing (even for the price) that I could find. I've used ReadIris, but not often on large documents (though it is set up for that). Some people have no concept of their language's Germanic history.

A quick trip to version tracker reports the only alternative to be OmniPage Pro which appears to be ridiculously expensive abandonware that requires Classic for installation. The included Iris software is PC only, but a Mac version seems to be available. Most importantly, I need an OCR solution. Why doesn't this thing "just work" with Image Capture? Single pages are 250k regardless of the settings. When I do get consistent scans, the file sizes are huge. Changing resolution or PDF or TIFF settings is a crap shoot. Counter intuitive with 4 or 5 separate application modules that all seem to do the same thing with 4 or 5 different places to enter scan options. The hardware works fine and the document feeder is robust, but I have four problems:ġ.
